Hervé KOUBI 알제리에 뿌리를 둔 에르베 쿠비는 프랑스에서 자랐으며 2002년 약학 박사를 획득하기 전에 엑상프로방스 대학에서 생물학과 무용을 공부했다. 칸느의 로젤라 하이타워 댄스스쿨을 마치고, 댄서로서 전문적인 경험을 쌓은 그는 2010년부터 북아프리카 출신의 12명에서 14명의 남성 스트리트 댄서 그룹과 함께 여러 작품을 발표했다. 현재 프랑스의 ‘폴내셔널슈페리어드당스’(Pole National Supérieur de Danse)에서 부안무가로 활동하고 있으며, 프랑스 문화부의 문예 훈장을 수여했다. 에르베쿠비컴퍼니는 프랑스 북부 칼레를 거점으로 유럽과 북미 전역에서 매년 총 85회의 공연을 해왔다. 주요작품으로는 <낮이 밤에 빚진 것>, <야만인의 밤>, <세계의 첫 새벽>, <소년은 울지 않는다>, <오디세이> 등이 있다. Of Algerian roots, Hervé Koubi grew up in France where he studied biology and dance at the University of Aix-en-Provence before graduating as a Pharmaceutical Doctor in 2002. After deciding to concentrate on a dancing career and graduating from the Rosella Hightower School of Dance in Cannes, Koubi gained professional experience as a dancer before creating his first project entitled Le Golem and collaborating with Guillaume Gabriel for all his works and more recently also with Fayçal Hamlat. Since 2010, he has been working with a group of 12 to 14 all male street dancers from North Africa on several works including What the Day Owes to The Night, The Barbarian Nights or The First Dawns of the World, Boys Don't Cry (October 2018), and Odyssey (January 2020). More recently, he has been Associate Choreographer at the Pole National Supérieur de Danse in France and has been awarded the French medal of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in July 2015. Based mainly in Calais, the company has conducted extensive touring a total of about 85 performances annually in both Europe and all over North America. |

They would whirl like dervishes then pause, slowly gesturing like desert mystics, beckoning through a bright haze. They would be strong, but wiry. They would mystify audiences, who would stare dumbfounded at the dual display of gymnastics and grace unlike anything in Western dance. If North African men preserved a traditional form of dance, they would look a lot like Compagnie Hervé Koubi, the French-based, Algerian-rooted-troupe. Ce que le jour doit à la nuit (« What the day owes to the night ») is a stunning fusion of acrobatics, gymnastics, b-boying, modern dance and ballet. Add traditional Sufi music, haze and athmospheric lighting, and what Koubi has created looks deceptively like an ancient desert ritual.
